Sentence Punctuation

Children learn basic punctuation and will discover how punctuation helps the reader to understand a sentence. They will then progress to more complex concepts such as commas and apostrophes.

Writing Sentences

The focus is on helping children to combine words into sentences and to extend their writing by starting to learn ways of sequences to eventually form short narratives.

Prefixes and Suffixes

Children are introduced to prefixes and suffixes, and the effects of these on the meaning of a root word. Their understanding of vers, adjectives and adverbs is extended as they learn how each of these can be created using specific suffixes.

Tenses

The present and past tenses are introduced which enables children to understand how and why tenses are used in writing and to recognise the difference between verbs written in the present and in the past. Children also progress to recognising the progressive verb form.
